Zine

So I have been giving the zine a lot of thought because there are many different ways to approach it as a book, instillation, interface, or any other form really. I will post sketches later today to accompany this post. Feedback please, I know it is late however. The cover would be the three packets of RGB pigment in a small, safe but soft inclosure of some sort. A needle safely tucked into book (with a little cover or something so it is not dangerously exposed), which I am thinking to make of ARCHES BFK paper, it is slightly textured, holds color and pigments well, and is durable. There would be a few inside pages, some with color and writings that I put in, such as the cultural symbols associated with various colours, from the reading/dream book/ other references. Other pages will be white, or blank, for people to record their dreams and such. To interact with the book, the dreamer much turn the book inside out, so the front cover is no longer freely exposed, and the dreamer is to poke the emblem or case on the cover, through the other pages 5 times, and let the ink flow out onto the other pages. This way, some pages with be filled with fluid color, like dreams, and people can record their dreams. I feel this may not quite be conceptually strong enough, will give it more thought and come back with sketches. I also thought about making a small "business" card for each color that could come out of the RGB combo with a description or interpretation of that color in dreams and include a little pocket or something to keep the card in.

My second idea is to have the packets wrapped in a nice, light cotton fabric, hanging from the ceiling or something, and the user must take a white rain drop (what the packets look like wrapped in the fabric), and poke it 3- five times, and then after the pigment has run out on the fabric, the must record a dream or make up a new dream based on their relationship with that color. The must then leave the dream cloth with me, and I want to make a small abstract flower garden and name the project "Field of Dreams"?
The concept behind it is the white, blank rain drops that hydrate the flowers to grow, color is added, photosynthesis, the sun, and wala! Flower garden.

Thoughts?

  1. OOH! I love these, so many implications! You better have some visual samples bec. I am psyched to try some out!!!!
The dream garden is wonderful and would be a great "event"/performance!
The: "I also thought about making a small "business" card for each color that could come out of the RGB combo with a description or interpretation of that color in dreams and include a little pocket or something to keep the card in." SHOULD ALSO BE MADE, distribution and connection to you may want to be considered. What is your intention here? To give a gift and walk away? Guidance? Aid someone? To instill wondering? Think about it, bring a ton to class! I don't care how they are made, but make them to drive our thinking.

  2. very cool—definitely not what i would have thought of as a "zine" but i love how this assignment has totally morphed into a more open-ended exercise. :o) i also like the "business cards" as a cool easy takeaway that i personally would totally use as a bookmark or something even if i kept the zine stored away.
