Cultural Object

This is a hand painted Tibetan chest in my room. I researched, and had a bit of a hard time finding what pigments were used in Tibet, but I think ochers. Sienna and yellow ochers. I really want to figure out the blue. I think Lazulite. When researching, I kept being lead to Thang-ga, the traditional Tibetan form of visual art. This abstract has interesting information.

  1. Depending on the year, Lazulite, would be Lapis Lazuli (or azurite), but they created a FAKE blue that everyone uses as it is BRIGHT... Lapis is really gray blue and SOFT!
There is a great "story" book on pigments by Victoria Findlay- really a great read...even for a color book. It's all stories about how she fell in love with colors from childhood up and she follows the color (pigment) throughout the world. Africa, Middle East, far East, etc...
