Shaun - Homework - Week08 - Zine

Inspired by the eastern view on “white,” my zine uses the haiku of the famous Japanese poet Kobayashi Isaa and the photos I took to represent my idea of “white.” Born in 1763, Kobayashi is regarded as one of the four haiku masters in Japan. His haiku are often about everyday life. I use the most basic need for human—food (rice and noodle) and the basic eastern tableware (cup, bowl, chopsticks, & spoon) as the theme. By combing the images and the selected haiku, I tell the story of “white.” The title of this zine is called “A Cup of White Tea” because Kobayashi’s name Issa means “a cup of tea.” “White” represents empty and void, but that doesn’t mean lifeless. It means full of energy and imagination. An empty bowl is full of life because it could be filled with anything. The possibility of “white” is endless.

P.S: It is hard to tell in the photos, but the background colors of the haiku parts are in different "white" and the English translation of the haiku are also in different "grey."

Zine Proposal

Post card series:
Culture+Paint+experiment+photography = Communicating new ideas
This weekend I spent doing some photography, messing with paint and basically wanted to get an idea of how light and photography affect the movement in paint.
Although my experiment did not give me exact results that I was looking for, I learnt a lot about what it means to use quality paint, consistency of the paint itself, paint texture, etc. It was a lot of fun as I love photography and paint. For my first experiment the results were pretty good. Certain shots spoke a lot to me and they tapped a certain emotion. From this experiment I figured if I dug deeper I would come up with really cool results.
For my project I would like to experiment more with other materials along with paints to create a postcard series depicting culture and color. Sorry about not being able to post the pictures separately and thus making the post long.

Zine Idea:
I liked our reading of “Whitescapes” from Chromophobia by David Batchelor. I wonder what the meaning of “white” is and how we see “white” in everyday life. When I learned the Chinese calligraphy and the painting in my childhood, my teacher always said we had to “leave white” in order to achieve the balance. What’s the meaning of “leave white” and why is “white” important in our culture? These are interesting questions that I would like to try to answer.

Although I only lived there for a very short time, I'm originally from Toronoto, Canada. Most of my family still lives in Ontario, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to learn a little bit more about my home country. First I looked up the flag, which had no significant meaning (that I could find). I thought maybe the color red would be important because the mounties wear it and it is on the flag, but I actually came to the conclusion that maybe the use of the color red is a vestage of Canada's attachment to Britain.

Instead I decided to trace changes in Canadian Currency throughout the century. Think about how many times a day you see money, in your wallet, being exchanged on the street, how often do you think about money? What impact does the color of money have on your perception of it?

First, I grouped all denominations by year and then I regrouped like denominations together. In the first set, you get a color picture of the era the money was used. In the second set you can see the diversity of hues, the proportions of color used, and the changes in design. Something interesting that begins to show up in the last two batches of currency redesign is the incorporation of anti-forgery security measures including magic numbers and ultraviolet imagery. Something cool in the 1986 batch was a chip embedded in the upperleft corner for the visually impaired. The chip could be scanned and the denomination of money would be audibly spoken. Currency reissuing has become centered on technological advances to prevent forgeries.

Being Asians, we are usually called “yellow people”... but we don’t call ourselves “yellow” in our own countries. I do think there are some “yellow” in my skin, but I don’t think I have more “yellow” in me than any other “non-yellow” people. So what’s my skin color? Oh well, some yellow, some red, some orange, some brown... it’s just skin color~!!!

This is Yu-Hsiang "Shaun" Chung's "autobiography". As an Asian, we often just use black ink as our color. By adding water to the black, it can create different "colors". It's a very achromatic system.
