Homework due 4.12.11

1. WRITE a Synopsis of your chosen topic that includes:
a. Your Point of View and Intended Solution.
b. The SPECIFIC audience you are addressing.

2. Visual Implementation: This is your MOCK UP of a designed object or experience. You will present THREE color variations. These variations will represent different "angles" that may be possible solutions. These are NOT just three different color palettes (called COLORWAYS). Each VARIATION should present a different solution to the problem. We will vote on which variation should move forward! SO, STRETCH your decisions and inventive abilities in this area!!! SHOW us what you SEE!!!!!!!!

***You are required to have SPECIFIC COLOR examples of your project. These must be physical (found/painted/dyed)- not only printed.

Zine due March 22

Hi Everyone,

Just to clarify, The zine worked on the past two weeks is due the Tuesday we get back from Spring break. That is March 22. You must bring in your finished zine and two copies of it. One for me and one for Tom. If your zine is difficult to make copies of you can photograph it and print the pictures out for us.

Over the next two weeks post images of tests/sketches addressing the issues we discussed in class. Give each other feedback and ask each other for help. The more you share ideas, the more you will learn. Also,your presence on the blog is part of your overall grade...so...just...POST IT.

It takes a lot of work to show what you intend, and I believe (at least in my case when I was a student) that I thought I had to wait or "grow" into my vision of the world- that is NOT true. You have EVERYTHING you need at your fingertips right now- you just have to grasp it and scream out what you want to say! (See Wojnarowicz quote below.)

Homework due 3/1/11

Here is the homework due on March 1:

1. Color inventory of the master image you chose.

2. Compositional thumbnails and presentation for Zine idea. Consider the following things:

- What questions do you want to answer? who are you talking to? What is your ultimate goal?

- Bring focus to the substance rather than the methodology or technique

- Avoid distorting data- maintain truth

- Encourage the viewer to compare differences (guide the viewers eye using color placement and design solutions)

- Simplify your idea so that it serves a reasonably clear purpose.

- Organize your information to SAY something

- Data Maps- we know these well- don’t take too much for granted. What you include is as important as what you exclude- consider context. (Remember the cancer maps in class.)

3. You will give a brief talk about the article you read.

Homework due 2/15/11

The homework for next week is:

1. Color and Culture: Choose an object. Create a profile for the object based on its physical, symbolic and cultural characteristics. Ask yourself what color it is, why its that color and how it helps to contextualize the object. Look at the pigments involved (review the pigment sheets that was attached in the email and then research what you want to expose about the objects.
Consider and include:

A. Cultural "birth" of the colors on this object and where the object, as well as the pigments use in it's creation, have traveled since it was made. You will begin with research, but may use your imagination if you can't find research to back you up.

B. Consider why is this object these colors? They may be applied or inherent to the object. Were they practical, symbolic, emotional, a replication of reality or a combination of these? And so why? Consider the subtleties- remember the Munsell chart we showed- is the color Blue? What kind of Blue?:
1st HUE: Blue green or blue violet or just a pure blue (compare it to something)
2nd VALUE: how light or dark, find a value scale and number it from 1-10
3rd CHROMA- is it very bright like the Spectrum (IE: Red), slightly off of the spectrum (Non-spectral- IE Rust), is it a Tone (mixed with gray) or just pure gray, brown or some other Neutral.

I know these may be difficult to differentiate, but think about it as we will be differentiating a bit more next week in class and you will have more PERCEPTUAL experience to combine with your knowledge. (You can also attend the Monday night workshop to learn more!)

Compile all this information in a visual document (data sheet, poster, brochure, outline, etc.) so it can be easily presented in class next week.

2. Skin Color: Describe your skin color and how you think your skin color relates to all the other skin colors in the world. Think about what paint colors you would mix to make the color of your skin. (we will experiment with mixing paint in class next week)

3. Bring what you have from this list: your paint, brushes a container for water, plastic plate to act as a palette and rags to class next week. (If you don't have paint you can find someone in class to team up with or use some of ours.) Some of you asked if you needed the specific paint- Guerra, No, but it does make studying color much easier on you.

Week 1: Homework

1. Complete "The Colorist" exercise PDF (located in the documents section of the blog)

2. Create an autobiography using the design and color basics we discussed in class. Use any materials you want.

3. Read Passages from Swann's Way (under "Proust, Swann's way readings) and analyze them as we discussed in class.
